Anushka Sharma may have found her happily ever after with ace cricketer Virat Kohli, but there’s no denying that her sartorial soulmate is designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee. Down the years, the star has discovered a kindred spirit in the couturier’s legacy-laden designs, choosing from his opulent fare for special occasions on the red carpet before finally tying the knot with a line-up designed exclusively by him. The duo has been known to create magic each time they’ve gotten together—the actor’s blush pink bridal lehenga ushered in a revolution of sorts in the wardrobes of millennial brides across the country. Ahead, we take a closer look at all the times Anushka Sharma stepped out in Sabyasachi’s creations.
Inside Anushka Sharma’s wedding wardrobe
After much speculation, Sharma and Kohli tied the knot in an intimate ceremony in Italy. In keeping with the postcard-perfect Tuscan countryside, the bride opted for a pastel Sabyasachi ensemble that took over Instagram feeds back in 2017. The blush pink lehenga was a labour of love by 67 karigars, who hand-embroidered the fabric in silk floss with motifs of exotic birds and butterflies over the course of 32 days. Kohli complemented his bride in an ivory sherwani with a gracefully draped chanderi safa that coordinated the hues of Sharma’s bridal lehenga.
The all-Sabyasachi wedding wardrobe spilled over to all of her ceremonies, including a decadent velvet sari for the engagement and a bohemian lehenga for the mehandi. After touching down in India in a breezy kurta and palazzo set, she championed the classic hues of bridal red for the Delhi reception. Dubbed as the ‘nayi naveli dulhan’ look by Mukherjee, the star opted for a regal Benarasi sari and heritage diamond choker. The finishing touches came in the form of a statement dash of sindoor, a sleek middle-parted mogra bun and a red bindi. Kohli followed suit in a black bandhgala and handwoven brocade churidar layered with an antique Pashmina shawl. For the Mumbai leg of the celebrations, Sharma channelled the glamour of old Hollywood in a smoky grey lehenga with textured sequins and organza flowers over an embroidered tulle base. The ensemble was cinched together at the waist with the couturier’s signature Bengal tiger belt.
Inside Anushka Sharma’s ethnic wardrobe
Having started her marital life in Sabyasachi’s finest creations, it comes as little surprise that Sharma turns to the designer for momentous occasions. The newly-weds celebrated their first Karwa Chauth together in Mumbai wearing a hand-printed georgette sari doused in the merry hues of sunshine yellow. For this year’s festivities, she opted for a red floral printed sari from the designer’s autumn/winter 2019 offering.
While she does seem to have a soft spot for the Sabyasachi’s statement reds, Sharma often experiments with pastel hues too. For Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’ Mumbai reception, she opted for a mint cocktail sari and emerald jewellery, choosing to swap her favoured bun with a textured ponytail. The hue continued to curry favour in her ethnic wardrobe, and she paired another breezy floral sari from the designer’s repertoire with shoulder-grazing earrings for an award show earlier this year. However, on days when she’s looking to make a statement, a lehenga is her silhouette of choice. The star ushered in Diwali this year wearing a scene-stealing ensemble from the couturier’s winter/bridal 2019 collection ‘Charbagh’. Standing tall in the colour-blocked lehenga skirt, she chose to pair the risqué neckline of the threadwork blouse with a statement choker. Stacked bangles and smoky eyes served as the perfect foil for her festive look. Scroll ahead for all the times Anushka Sharma made a statement with Sabyasachi creations.
