Women Bangladesh Desk: Happy birthday, Oprah Winfrey! The media icon turns 64 on January 29, 2018. Winfrey set off a flurry of presidential run rumors with her rousing Golden Globes speech that touched on racism, sexual harassment and the #MeToo movement.
Before long, #Oprah2020 was a trending hashtag and some people began to wonder if she was seriously considering running for president. When Winfrey’s partner, Stedman Graham, said Oprah would “absolutely do it,” the speculation only intensified.
But Winfrey has, once and for all, put the rumors to rest.
“I’ve always felt very secure and confident with myself in knowing what I could do and what I could not. And so it’s not something that interests me,” she said in the March issue of InStyle, in an interview that took place three weeks before her landmark Golden Globes speech. “I don’t have the DNA for it.”
She added that her close friend Gayle King understands why she would never want a shot at the Oval Office.
“Gayle—who knows me as well as I know myself practically—has been calling me regularly and texting me things, like a woman in the airport saying, ‘When’s Oprah going to run?’ So Gayle sends me these things, and then she’ll go, ‘I know, I know, I know! It wouldn’t be good for you—it would be good for everyone else,’” Winfrey said. “I met with someone the other day who said that they would help me with a campaign. That’s not for me.”
Connecting with people and sharing their extraordinary stories will always be her true passion, Winfrey says.
“I have to say the core of me is about conversations,” she told InStyle.“Exploring the depth of our human experiences. That is what I do. That is my calling.”
